Danny Boy – Ambitious though arrogant, unrelentingly dull melodrama of sax player Rea, who trades his sax for a gun after observing a triple assassination. This was Jordan’s directorial introduction, which he furthermore did the screenplay. He and leading guy Rea later reteamed for The Weeping Game. (92 minutes, 1982)
House of the Black Death – Wizard keeps individuals prisoner in a scary old residence; extremely dragged out, poor grade stuff. Cast includes Lon Chaney, Jr., John Carradine, Andrea King, and Tom Drake. (80 minutes, 1965)
Night Nurse – Extraordinary, hard story of nurse (Stanwyck) who could not discount unusual goings on in home where she works. Blondell adds zingy aid and it is one of Gable’s most remarkable early appearances. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Ben Lyon, Joan Blondell, Clark Gable, Charlotte Merriam, and Charles Winninger.
Thief of Baghdad – Reeves looks for the elusive blue rose so he could wed the Sultan’s baby girl. This is nothing like the Sabu interpretation, although this is a great piece of work. Cast includes Steve Reeves, Giorgia Moll, Arturo Dominici, and Edy Vessel. (90 minutes, 1961)
Kill or Be Killed – Karate champions lock limbs as ex-Nazi instructor desires retaliation contrary to Japanese counterpart who bested him in a contest throughout WW2. This is a cut above the characteristic martial arts fodder. Cast includes James Ryan, Norman Combes, Charlotte Michelle, and Danie DuPlessis. (90 minutes, 1980)
Sawdust and Tinsel – Kindles soar in this beautiful, metaphorical movie set in a small-time carnival and concentrating on the relation between carnival owner Gronberg and his oversexed mistress (Andersson). Cast includes Harriet Andersson, Ake Gronberg, Anders Ek, Gudrun Brost, Hasse Ekman, and Annika Tretow. (92 minutes, 1953)
La Salamandre – Reporter Bideau and author Denis analyze truths behind the case of bizarre Ogier, implicated by her uncle of tried murder. Cast includes Bulle Ogier, Jean-Luc Bideau, and Jacques Denis. Easy, preposterous evaluation of reality, (125 minutes, 1971)
Seize the Day – Williams is outstanding as Tommy Wilhelm, turning 40 and a failure by any standard, he is insolvent, damaged and despondent for love. Wiseman and Stiller offer fine assistance as his cold hearted dad and a con man he naively believes in. Lots of familiar faces in tiny roles, Tony Roberts, Richard Shull, John Fiedler, Jo Van Fleet, William Hickey, Eileen Heckart, and numerous others. Cast includes Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller, and Glenne Headly. (93 minutes, 1986)
Gun the Man Down – Injured outlaw avows retribution on associates who left him in the middle of a robbery gone badly. Cast includes James Arness, Angie Dickinson, Robert Wilke, and Emile Meyer. (78 minutes, 1956)
Zoolander – Male model Derek Zoolander is hired to help stop a group of assassins who are posing as male models. He must somehow penetrate this private group. Making things even more demanding is Hansel, a new, up and coming model, who keeps screwing things up for Zoolander.
MGM’s The Big Parade of Comedy – Fifty of the best megastars of all time emerge in this collection, however too briefly. Cast includes Laurel and Hardy, Keaton, Gable, Robert BencWey, Jean Harlow, and Malion Davies.
